The Queens Award winning Great Torrington Cavaliers have raised many thousands of pounds for local charities over the years doing various events around the historic town of Great Torrington. However, it's the impressive structures following near perfect designs on the original designs that they are most famous for.
In the last 50 years they have built some incredible builds like the German Battleship Bismark, the Gunpowder Plot, HMS Victory and The Great Fire of London to name but a few.
The last build in 2015 was a mock up of Trumpton,
I was very fortunate to have been asked to document the build and the evening of the burn, and having grown up in Great Torrington, I'm really proud to announce that i have been asked to do the same for the 2020 build.
As the title suggests the 2020 build will be a full size replica of the Mayflower in Port in Plymouth 1620. This could be the biggest and most impressive build yet, and will coincide with the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower sailing to the new world and the 50th anniversary of the Great Torrington Cavaliers.
So for those of you who are not aware of what happens to these fine builds, that take two years to complete once they're finished, well let me enlighten you.
That's it, they burn it down!
Oh and there's a firework or two
Actually it's a fantastic evening with thousands of people watching all around, and where the Cavaliers raise thousands for charity. So well worth the weekend free time the guys give up for two years, and with such hard work and dedication comes the rewards, last year the Great Torrington Cavaliers were awarded The Queens Award for Voluntary Service.
